TheMtnFactory™ is the creative workshop behind Torched Peaks—part design studio, part R&D space, and the place where new ideas, materials, and ways of bringing the mountains home are explored.

Over the years, we’ve had the pleasure of creating wall art and ski décor for professional athletes, ski and snowboard industry leaders, mountain homeowners, and passionate skiers and snowboarders across North America.

Today, Torched Peaks artwork is featured in more than 25 boutique retailers and premier design showrooms across North America and has been featured in regional and national publications, and various gift guides including Travel + Leisure.

Torched Peaks maps are made for skiers and snowboarders who feel a real connection to the mountains they love—from weekend warriors and lifelong ski bums to industry professionals and professional athletes. For many, a favorite mountain becomes part of who they are, and our maps are a way to bring a piece of that mountain home.

We partner directly with several ski resorts to develop maps that celebrate their mountains, while our artwork can be found at dozens of additional resorts across North America. Our maps are also displayed in homes and ski houses, luxury hotels, vacation properties, real estate offices, and boutique ski décor retailers across the country.

Our maps have also been commissioned for professional skiers and snowboarders, ski instructors and patrollers, resort executives and mountain operations teams, and companies throughout the ski industry. They’ve been given as retirement gifts, client appreciation gifts, and real estate closing gifts, with commissioned artwork traveling to customers as far away as Europe.

In shared spaces, the maps often become more than décor. Customers tell us people gather around them, study the trails, point out favorite runs, share mountain stories, and even stop to take photos with them. That’s ultimately what we want each piece to become: mountain art that looks beautiful in the room, but means something to the people in it.

Our artists are pioneers in the world of wooden ski trail maps. The concept was sparked in 2015 by our founder and lead ski map artist, who, while admiring vintage ski trail maps, envisioned something unique. With a background as a professional snowboarder and years of experience designing trails in the ski industry, his passion for ski resorts runs deep. Seeking a way to bring the beauty of his favorite resorts into his own home, he realized that traditional ski map art was limited to posters or canvas prints. The idea for handcrafted, 3D layered wooden ski maps was born, offering a fresh and unique way for people to celebrate their passion for skiing and snowboarding.

Torched Peaks ski maps are designed to capture far more than a resort's basic trail network. Through our SlopeTheory™ process, we research the terrain, trail layout, mountain operations, landmarks, local knowledge, and distinctive character of each resort—often spending up to 40 hours researching, designing, and refining a single mountain.

That research is translated into hundreds of details throughout the artwork. Ski trails are identified by name and difficulty rating, while skier and snowboarder icons highlight everything from popular groomers and beginner trails to double diamonds, extreme terrain, mogul runs, glades, race trails, terrain parks, locally known runs, and popular backcountry routes where appropriate. Chairlifts and gondolas feature icons representing the capacity of the actual lift, while elevation markers identify important peaks and terrain.

Lodges, warming huts, base villages, mountain operations, roads, parking areas, snowcats, snowmaking elements, and other recognizable resort landmarks are incorporated wherever relevant. Surrounding features such as lakes, rivers, mountain peaks, and state or national parks help place the resort within the larger landscape. On select maps, lakes and rivers are created from separate blue wood inlays, adding another layer of color and dimension.

The experience doesn't necessarily end at the ski-area boundary. Nearby hiking, mountain biking, Nordic skiing, and snowshoeing trail systems are incorporated where applicable, with trails named whenever possible and activity-specific icons identifying the routes. Some mountains also include popular fishing areas, while wildlife, birds, hikers, fishermen, skiers, snowboarders, and other mountain-specific icons add regional character and bring the mountain experience to life.

The result is detail at two different scales. SlopeTheory™ helps us interpret the mountain as a whole—its terrain, trails, lifts, peaks, valleys, and topography—while also capturing the smaller details and local knowledge that make each resort distinct.

Every detail has a purpose. These aren't generic elements added simply to make a map look complicated. They're researched and selected mountain by mountain, then thoughtfully integrated into the overall composition. By balancing those details with the natural grain, warmth, and variation of the wood, the wood itself becomes part of the artwork—creating a more elegant, refined interpretation of the mountain.

Our goal isn't simply to make a detailed ski map. It's to create one that gets more interesting the closer you look.

Each Torched Peaks map is handcrafted using our AlpineStrata™ process, building the mountain from separate layers of natural wood with individually cut and assembled pieces creating the terrain, trails, landmarks, and details. Rooted in a construction method our lead artist first developed in 2018, AlpineStrata™ transforms our wall art into 4–10 layers of natural wood, creating genuine physical depth and relief.

Unique to Torched Peaks, our AlpineStrata™ Inlay process recesses the white ski trails into the mountain rather than applying them on top of the wood layers. This more complex construction allows the surrounding wooded terrain and tree islands to remain physically raised—much like actual ski trails cutting through the mountain. Additional layers build the surrounding peaks and valleys, creating a cascading effect across the terrain, while lakes, rivers, lifts, landmarks, and other mountain details are carefully integrated into the composition. AlpineStrata™ Inlay is our most intricate expression of dimensional mountain art, exclusive to Torched Peaks.

The difference begins well before the wood is cut. Our SlopeTheory™ design process can require up to 40 hours of research, design, and refinement for a single mountain. Rather than simply tracing a resort's published trail map, we use Google Earth, satellite imagery, topographic research, resort maps, photos, videos, and local knowledge to study the actual mountain. This allows us to more accurately understand the width, shape, and pitch of ski runs, as well as chairlift lines that follow the natural contours and elevation changes of the terrain.

That research doesn't create the artwork—our artists do. The findings are interpreted and hand-drawn in graphic design software, with every ski trail, tree island, peak, valley, lake, river, and terrain feature individually drawn or traced by our artists using the research and imagery as references for accuracy. The technology informs the artwork; it doesn't replace the artist.

Our lead designer is a former professional snowboarder with extensive ski resort experience, including designing ski trails. That firsthand knowledge influences how we interpret a mountain's terrain, trail network, landmarks, and overall character.

We also research what makes each resort distinctive—from iconic runs and hidden gems to local landscapes and mountain culture. Skier and snowboarder icons may highlight celebrated groomers, mogul runs, terrain parks, glades, or race courses, while wildlife and other artistic details are chosen to reflect the region and bring the mountain to life.

We design our maps the way we like to ride—with flow. Like carving a perfectly groomed run or finding an untouched line through fresh powder, the composition should have a natural rhythm. Every trail, lift, landmark, icon, hidden detail, and wood layer is intentionally incorporated so the eye moves naturally through the mountain.

We believe detail should be designed into the art—not piled on, glued on, or added simply because there's room for it. Our maps are rich with trails, lifts, landmarks, terrain, and mountain details, but every element is designed with purpose. We carefully compose those details to complement our premium, hand-selected natural wood, allowing its grain, warmth, texture, and natural variation to remain visible throughout the piece. The wood itself becomes part of the artwork, resulting in ski resort art that feels elegant and refined while still capturing the character and complexity of the mountain.

The goal isn't simply to reproduce a ski trail map. It's to capture the experience and personality of the mountain and turn it into heirloom-quality artwork that celebrates the places, memories, and traditions that keep skiers and snowboarders coming back.

Since introducing the original handcrafted wood ski map concept in 2015, Torched Peaks has remained committed to creating ski resort art that's as meaningful as the mountains themselves.

Our ski trail maps begin with SlopeTheory™—our research, design, and refinement process that can require up to 40 hours for a single mountain. We study resort maps, Google Earth, satellite imagery, topography, photos, videos, local knowledge, and the distinctive terrain and character of each resort before refining the artwork through multiple design iterations.

Our artists then interpret that research, individually drawing or tracing every ski trail, tree island, peak, valley, lake, river, and terrain feature for accuracy. Technology informs the artwork—it never replaces the artist.

Our wall art maps are then transformed through our AlpineStrata™ process, building the mountain from 3–10 precision-cut layers of natural wood to create genuine physical depth and relief. Our most intricate wall art features AlpineStrata™ Inlay, using 6–10 layers with individually cut white wood ski trails recessed into the mountain as separate inlays. On some designs, more than 50 individual tree islands are precisely positioned and hand-glued into the surrounding terrain. These raised wooded areas create the recessed trail network, allowing the white ski trails to sit within the mountain rather than being applied on top of it. This more intricate form of dimensional construction is unique to Torched Peaks.

Once the design work is complete, a single map can require up to 10 hours of hands-on assembly and finishing. Each piece is precision-cut and engraved before the wood layers are carefully aligned and assembled. Individual tree islands are positioned and hand-glued, the custom frame is crafted, fitted, and hand-stained, and a final low-gloss protective coat is applied to the face of the completed map.

The result is our signature dimensional style—designed mountain by mountain and handcrafted layer by layer..

Our largest maps measure up to 40" x 50", creating a true statement piece, while smaller sizes like 16" x 19" are often chosen for gifts and more intimate spaces. Every size includes the same artwork, with no reduction in intricacy, ensuring each piece preserves the detail, depth, and character of the mountain.

Prices range from $299 for our smaller pieces to $1,995 for our larger 40" x 50" statement maps. These larger works are designed for expansive great rooms, fireplace settings, and open walls in luxury mountain homes and ski houses—spaces where the artwork is meant to become a defining focal point.

AlpineStrata™ is Torched Peaks' signature process for creating dimensional ski resort art from multiple precision-cut layers of natural wood. Rooted in a construction method our lead artist first developed in 2018, each mountain is built layer by layer, with individual pieces cut, engraved, layered, and assembled by hand to create genuine physical depth and relief.

Rather than creating the appearance of depth on a flat surface, AlpineStrata™ physically builds the mountain in layers. Peaks, valleys, ski terrain, tree islands, lakes, rivers, and surrounding landscape elements are incorporated at different levels, creating depth and texture that change as light moves across the artwork. Individual wood layers are approximately 1/4 inch thick, giving the finished terrain substantial physical relief.

Select Torched Peaks maps feature AlpineStrata™ Inlay, our most intricate expression of the process. These designs are constructed from 6–10 precision-cut layers of natural wood, with white ski trails recessed into the mountain as separate wood inlays rather than applied on top of the terrain. This allows the wooded areas and tree islands between the trails to remain physically raised—much like ski trails cutting through an actual mountain.

Every AlpineStrata™ map is assembled by hand from premium, hand-selected natural wood, allowing the grain, warmth, texture, and natural variation of the material to remain visible. Rather than simply serving as a surface for the artwork, the wood itself becomes part of the finished piece, creating a more elegant and refined interpretation of the mountain.

All of our maps are handcrafted and made-to-order. We make every effort to expedite your order and lead times vary depending on the product. During the winter season, lead times may range from 14 to 21 days (often sooner) depending on the product.
